Personal and Family Information - Schmidley lives with his father and
mother. He is responsible for carrying water, gathering firewood and gardening. His father is employed as a project worker and his mother is
sometimes employed as a farmer. Soccer, singing, playing with marbles and art are
Schmidley's favorite activities. In primary school his performance is average
and he also regularly attends church activities.
Community and Project Information - Schmidley lives on the plains of
Pointe des Mangues, home to approximately 4,000 residents. Typical houses are
constructed of cement floors, wood walls and corrugated iron roofs. The most
commonly spoken language is Creole. The regional diet consists of maize, fish
and rice. Common health problems in this area include flu, malaria, typhoid
fever and ringworm. Most adults in Pointe des Mangues are unemployed but some
work as fishers and earn the equivalent of $13.00 per month. This community
needs schools and employment opportunities.
Our sponsorship allows the staff of Pointe des Mangles to provide
Schmidley with Bible teaching, medical exams, recreational activities, social
events, educational classes and scholastic materials. The center staff will also
provide educational workshops for Schmidley's parents
